The Pineville First United Methodist Church 2550 Monroe Hwy Pineville, LA 71360 will be holding their 2nd “Women’s Retreat - Celebrating the Uniqueness in You” on June 30, 2007 at 8:30am-CST. A brunch will be served. The Special Guest Speaker for the Group will be National Author/Columnist/Speaker and Radio Host, Shirley W. Mitchell of Alabama. While the focus of the Retreat is for those women who are approaching, or who have attained that “Golden 50 & Beyond”, Women of all Ages are invited to attend this very Special Women’s Event - Get Passionate – Get Motivated – Get Inspired … as Shirley W. Mitchell, “The Golden Egg of Aging” helps you to “Celebrate Your Own Uniqueness”! The Purpose of United Methodist Women... The Organized Unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the Global Ministries of the Church. 1000 Club... In 1952, a group of laypersons from First Church, Shreveport started the 1000 Club. Led by Bob Lay, the goal was to enlist 1000 people who would give ten dollars three times a year.  The money was used to help new churches get started.  Over the years, The Bob Lay Memorial 1000 Club has contributed over two million dollars and has helped over 100 churches. As the years have gone by, the expenses of building a new churches have risen.  So the 1000 Club has tried to keep up. Each District is asked for a proportional amount of the $75,000 that is given to a church.  Funds given above a districts proportion will be used in that district. The Conference goal is to raise $150,000 annually United Methodist Women is a specific adult ministry geared towards adult females. It began in the 1800s as home and foreign missionary societies. According to the Discipline, every church should organize a UMW group. While it is to focus on ministries with women, children, and youth, mission work is still a major priority in UMW.
